Frequently asked questions

We understand that choosing a supported living service is a significant decision. This FAQ section is designed to address common questions and concerns, providing clarity and reassurance as you explore options for your loved one's care and well-being.

Q: What is Northern Skies Supported Living?

A: Northern Skies is a small, relationship-focused agency based in Edmonton, Alberta. We provide stable, safe, and compassionate support to individuals with complex needs, helping them live meaningful, dignified lives in their home.

Q: Who do you serve?

A: We support adults with developmental disabilities or complex care needs. Our services are customized to each person’s goals, abilities, and lifestyle.

Q: What types of services do you offer?

A: Our services include:

  • Supported independent living (daily routines, personal care, life skills)
  • Medication and health support
  • Community access and engagement (outings, social activities, goal planning)
  • 24 hour in home care

Q: How do you make support plans?

A: We create person-centered support plans in collaboration with each individual, their family or guardian, and any other supports. Plans are reviewed and updated regularly to meet changing needs and goals.

Q: How many staff will be in a home or when supporting someone?

A: Staffing depends on the individual’s needs and support plan. We prioritize stable staffing so clients see familiar faces and can build trusting relationships.

Q: Do you accept PDD funding?

A: Yes. We support individuals who use PDD (Persons with Developmental Disabilities) funding for residential or community support needs.

Q: How does the PDD application work?

A: Guardians or applicants apply through Alberta Supports. Once eligible, a PDD worker helps develop an Outcome Plan and an Individual Support Plan with Northern Skies.

Q: How do you handle crisis or challenging behaviour?

A: Our staff are trained in CPI / NVCI (crisis prevention and non-violent intervention). We plan ahead for safety and de-escalation, and involve families and guardians in crisis planning.

Q: What if I’m worried about abuse or safety?

A: We take safety seriously. PDD has strict protocols for abuse prevention and response. Any concerns are addressed immediately and collaboratively with families and guardians.

Q: How do we get started with Northern Skies?

A: Contact us via our Contact page. We’ll schedule a meeting to learn about your loved one’s needs, tour any homes (if applicable), and begin the support planning process together.

Q: How long does it take to get support once we decide to work with you?

A: Timing depends on readiness, PDD planning, and home availability. We create a transition plan to ensure a smooth transition.

Q: How will you keep me updated about my loved one’s progress?

A: We provide regular updates, schedule check-ins, and make sure you are involved in major decisions. Transparency is very important to us.
